Planting & Care of LIVE Trees
|
|
(also called B & B -- Balled & Burlapped)
- Hole Preparation
Depth of the hold should leave 20% of root ball above ground and width should be 2 times that of the root ball. Place in hole.
- Preparation of root ball & planting
Cut twine around the trunk and top of the root ball. Fold burlap back to the sides of the root ball. Do not remove wire basket or loosen the dirt. Pack a mix of one half planting mix and one half original soil firmly around the sides of the root ball. Water well with a root stimulator (optional). Add 2-3" of mulch on the top. When planting in clay soil, add sand.
- Water with a slow trickle
Saturate root ball thoroughly with a slow trickle for one half to one hour. Water every 7 to 10 days (depending in the weather & temperature) until the tree is well established in 6 to 9 months. Be careful of over-watering when planting in heavy clay soil.
- Feed new plants
Use start-up fertilizer to the base of plant as recommended monthly. Usually discontinue use in September.
- Feed established plants
Feed established plants twice a year. In the spring and again in the fall with Holly Food for evergreens.

Caring for your LIVE Christmas tree Indoors |
|
|
|
- Gradually move the tree from cold outside temperatures to warm indoor conditions. Store tree in an unheated, sheltered area such as a garage or porch - a place that is cold, but away from freezing temperatures and the elements.
- Once inside, a week to tens days is long enough
Place tree in a water tight container. Keep the root ball moist but not flooded. Place a sheet of plastic or rubber under the tree to catch any excess moisture. Live trees can be decorated, making sure all lights and connections are in good working condition.
- Moving the tree from inside to outside:
Do not remove the tree directly from the house into freezing temperatures. Move tree to a sheltered area for several days. This helps the tree adjust to outside temperatures.
